There are two types of fixed spool fishing reels. Open faced and Closed faced.
Open faced fishing reels have the spool and bale arm exposed. Closed faced fishing reels have the spool and bale arm enclosed in a cover and the pin normally is engaged with a button.
When buying a reel generally it is best to go for the established brands like Shimano Daiwa Browning etc as they provide the most support and back up if you reel decides to break or go wrong.
The reel should run smoothly this is due to the ball bearing sets, you should try to get a reel with at least 2 if not 3 sets of ball bearings.
Make sure your drag system gives out line easily. It is useful to try out a new reel on a rod in the shop to make sure your finger reach correctly. Spare spools are also useful as it allows you to carry different strenght breaking strain line to deal with every fishing situation.
Loading Line on to a reel
To ensure that your new reel functions correctly make sure that your spool is loaded correctly with line to the correct level. The line should come to 2mm of the lip of the spool.
