Poles are long hollow carbon fibre rods generally in sections. Although cheaper Fibre glass models are available. The higher the carbon content the lighter and thinner the pole.

Long Poles

When getting a long pole it is best to look for lightness stiffness and balance. Most poles sag a little towards the tip but avoid poles that sag towards the butt at all.

The top sections of long poles are able to have elastic of various grades fitted internally to take the shock of the hooked fish. There are no reels on pole the line it attached directly to the elastic via a connector. The fish is landed by shipping the pole back and taking off sections until the fish is in netting distance.

Long fishing poles range in length from 5-18 meters. The best advice for buying a pole is to choose a length that suits all you need and go for the most expensive in that bracket. It is much better to have a nice light rigid 11mt pole than a heavy floppy 16mt pole.

Whips

When buying a whip look for one that is stiff at the bottom with a soft tip. That said if the tip is too stiff it will bump fish off on the strike and it is too soft it will cause difficulties on a windy day.

Before you start fishing make sure to check your elastic for signs of wear. It is good ideas to occasionally uses some lubricant to make sure your elastic flows smoothly from the tip or dip the tip under the water and pull on the rig to lube the elastic that way.

When you are finished fishing with the pole make sure to wipe down the male and inside the female joints to remove any grit or dirt as this can eventually make your pole split. Baby wipes are very useful fo this task and it laves a smooth coating in the pole
