Maggots are the larvae of the common fly. Generally they are commercially produced in a range of colours and 3 basic sizes.Maggot Pinkie, squatt. Spotting Freshness is easy in large white maggots as they will have black spots of food still inside them. The bigger the spot the fresher the maggot. Maggots when damp or wet will escape from anywhere. So make sure to shield them with your umbrella when its raining. If they do get a bit wet make sure to close the lid correctly and add some dry maize meal.
Cleaning maggots is very important to keep them fresh and to reduce sweating and smell. Squatts are best left in their original dam sand.
To clean maggots you should have 3mm riddle and a container that fits under it.Dry maize meal and a clean bait box.
Pour the maggots in to the riddle and shake quickly to remove the all the old maize or sawdust then place over the container. After few minutes the maggots will pass through the riddle leaving the dead maggot behind. Transfer the clean maggot to the bait box and add a cup of maize per 2 pints of maggots.
To hook maggots the aim is present a wriggling lively bait so you must not burst the maggot. Use a fine or medium wire hook and try hook it between eyes just under the flap of skin.
To make maggots float add a little water to a bait box and add a handful of maggots secure the lip and leave for 20 min the maggots should float then
